Everyone! https://www.usxpress.com/whos-thirsty-everyone/ Wed, 22 Jun 2022 11:13:00 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=236785 Beverage season means a wave of demand for hauling drinks

What’s happening: It’s hot, and that means a tidal wave of demand for hauling drinks to consumers, from water and tea to beer and soda.

By the numbers: Beverages are a $146 billion business in the U.S.

Tips for better shipping: Work with carriers with relationships on both the shipper and retailer sides. Get more flexible delivery through drop-trailer agreements. Aim for predictable service during surges through long-term carrier contracts. Use brokerage to complement asset-based partnerships.

The bottom line: When it comes to the seasonal beverage surge, a little bit of planning and a couple of season-specific strategies can keep the drinks flowing.

As temperatures rise, a big appetite for beverages can leave shippers sweating the details of getting a tidal wave of drinks hauled, delivered, and onto store shelves. A little bit of planning and a couple of season-specific strategies can keep that traffic flowing.

One smart way to stay ahead of thirsty shoppers is to work with a carrier that serves both beverage shippers and the retailers they supply, said Adam Veron, head of Enterprise Sales for U.S. Xpress.

“We share a lot of the same grocery and major retail customers that beverage shippers serve, so we have a fundamental understanding of how those retail customers work because we do business directly with them,” Adam said.

Having drop-trailer privileges with many customers means U.S. Xpress can roll in with an empty trailer and trade that empty for a loaded trailer already packed with pallets of thirst-quenching drinks. That means shippers can load up the empty trailers whenever they’re ready, and work with wide delivery windows.

“We may be able to schedule more flexible drop delivery appointments which helps everyone out,” Adam said. “That extra flexibility could make the difference in on-time delivery.”

Trucking has several predictable seasons, including produce season in the spring and the holiday shipping season as the year draws to a close. But in a pandemic-disrupted world where every day delivers new and bigger surprises, it’s hard to come by a sure thing.

“We’re in a time of radical unpredictability,” Adam said.

But it’s easy to predict huge demand for drinks, as the U.S. beverage industry is worth about $146 billion, and the global market is valued at $1.5 trillion – yes, that’s trillion with a T.

Sales of beverages in the U.S. fell sharply in 2020 as folks hunkered down, but the numbers roared back in 2021, topping out far above 2019 demand.

As summer heats up and consumers get even thirstier, partnering with carriers that work with a wide variety of customers in multiple industries is another strategy for meeting demand surges. Those companies are well-positioned to surf waves of demand and to accommodate the often unexpected ebbs and flows of shipping.

“We operate in diverse verticals – consumer products, retail, meal and beverage, manufacturing, paper,” Adam said. “If one section in surging, there’s significant advantage in having a lot of diversity as far a customer base. That diversity provides reliability, predictability, and versatility.”

The advantages of asset-based services include fixed costs, which can be an essential factor to planning for traffic that tends to run through cycles of demand.

“Customers that could be impacted by seasonal swings can benefit from contracted capacity and having commitments established,” Adam said. “That’s a good way to secure reliable capacity even during a crunch like beverage season.”

But brokerage services can be an important complement to asset-based services in meeting demand for capacity during surges.

“We work with thousands of partners carriers in our brokerage area,” Adam said. “Brokerage has unique advantages, including providing rates based on fast-changing market conditions.”

Recession-proof products need can-do shipping https://www.usxpress.com/recession-proof-products-need-can-do-shipping/ Wed, 25 May 2022 14:36:01 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=236760 U.S. Xpress finds new ways to get goods to shelves for a longtime customer.

The pandemic created huge demand for consumer and personal goods, and manufacturers had to get creative to move those goods on time despite supply chain challenges. For one U.S. Xpress shipper, a tight partnership that offers flexible options for moving goods better gets that job done.

“This client needed more capacity, and they allowed us to be as flexible and creative as possible,” said Merideth Lewis, vice president of sales for U.S. Xpress. “The nature of their business is recession-proof. People don’t stop buying household and personal products.”

This major manufacturer needed the predictability and scale of an asset-based carrier and the array of creative capacity solutions offered by our Xpress Technologies division. U.S Xpress brought all of those tools to the table, along with consistent connections to our Customer Experience and Sales Teams.

“There’s such value in the relationship – there was a mutual understanding that we were in this situation together, we’ve gotta figure this out,” Meredith said.

To meet growing demand for their products, this manufacturer opened a new distribution facility in the Southwest which grew their transportation network. They were moving more goods closer to customer destinations, which was great for getting products to shelves faster. Our team identified power-only services to meet the on-time delivery expectations.

In partnership with the Xpress Technologies brokerage group at U.S. Xpress, Merideth and her team identified opportunities to offer power-only services to the customer, which authorized other carriers to haul U.S. Xpress trailers loaded with their goods.

The relationship with this customer has been in place for years, but as the challenges in the consumer goods industry have evolved, the solutions U.S. Xpress offers have evolved along with them, Merideth said.

“They are team-minded and collaborative when they task us to fix a problem,” Merideth said. “That’s a good recipe for a partnership that keeps business moving.”

It’s getting hot out there https://www.usxpress.com/its-getting-hot-out-there/ Wed, 20 Apr 2022 15:28:00 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=236538 Three time-tested strategies to help you weather the spring surge.

The drab days of winter are behind us, and soon your schedule will be filled with summer staples: picnics, bike rides, backyard games, the ritualistic Saturday morning lawn mowing, water sports, and yes, the requisite summer cookout.

All those parties, get-togethers, and home improvement projects combine to create an annual spring shipping surge in anticipation of summer. And this one is shaping up to be a doozy: The National Retail Federation is predicting near-record import levels heading into summer. Shippers are working overtime to make sure the shelves are stocked before consumers rush to clean them out.

The spring surge, like other seasonal demand cycles, puts a strain on the entire supply chain. Regardless of your role, we all feel the squeeze. Flexibility becomes the name of the game for shippers. Here are three time-tested strategies to help you navigate the strains of the season.

Pick off-time load and unload schedules

Sometimes being flexible is as simple as the old “be where they ain’t” strategy. Carriers have more demand than they can feasibly service, so temporarily shifting load and unload times to unconventional hours gives carriers a larger window to work with. If the typical working hours are filled, try offering load and unload times when carriers won’t be covered by fulfilling spring demand.

Use a daily load and unload plan to support your operation

How prepared are you for incoming trailers? Many professional drivers pull in to find shippers unprepared to receive their load, leaving them stranded and losing money. For drop-and-hook loads, is the empty trailer ready? Or will drivers need to spend hours chasing a trailer? Conversely, if you don’t have empty trailers available, have you communicated this to the carrier? Surprising a professional driver when they arrive can cause delays, making them to be late to their next load. Preparation and planning are strong buoys during demanding shipping seasons.

Consider using brokerage to meet surge capacity needs

Modern brokerage is embracing new technology solutions that give shippers unparalleled extended capacity. All the freight acceptance, revenue management, and fleet management are in one place, creating a more transparent environment for both shippers and carriers. When you need capacity at a moment’s notice, brokerage is often a shipper’s best friend.

Conclusion

Like other demand cycles, we’re all affected — no link in the supply chain is left untouched. Shippers need their goods moved, and carriers are trying to service as many loads of those goods as possible. With a bit of flexibility, creative solutions like brokerage, and proper planning, we’ll all be relaxing around a fired-up grill in no time.

Shipper Spotlight: tailored solutions for volatile shipping environments https://www.usxpress.com/shipper-spotlight-tailored-solutions-for-volatile-shipping-environments/ https://www.usxpress.com/shipper-spotlight-tailored-solutions-for-volatile-shipping-environments/#respond Wed, 13 Apr 2022 20:03:35 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35897

How one shipper’s boutique solution powered their logistics operation.

Consider all the reasons you’ve been to a home improvement store — maybe you needed an extra can of paint, a specific tool, or a truckload of lumber for a backyard project. Every shopper needs something different than the customer before them, and often they need hard-to-find parts or items in massive quantities, to say nothing of frequent seasonal changes that affect inventory — it’s difficult to predict. Customers don’t usually arrive to gather their weekly shopping list like they may at the supermarket. If you oversee logistics for one of these stores, how do you begin to plan this out?

That’s the exact question one of our Houston-area shippers asked. The home improvement retailer faced an uphill battle planning their loads — some days they needed three loads to move their goods, while others called for over 20.

Accounting for this volatility was front and center when they came to us, especially as they entered spring and summer, two distinct, back-to-back seasonal sales spikes. On top of this, shipping in Houston presents its own challenges: traffic, an enormous, tangly infrastructure, and weather can throw quick, unforeseen wrenches in even the most well-prepared of shipping operations.

In the past three years, we’ve used a Dedicated fleet of nine professional drivers to service this customer. Though serviceable, this solution couldn’t take on the large swings in demand the customer needed. It could stand to be reformulated. They needed a solution built with those swings in mind from the ground up.

Now, we service this account with 11 more Dedicated, professional drivers for a total of 20. When they need more capacity, they tap Xpress Technologies, our brokerage division, to fill in the gaps. It’s a fully integrated solution that handles surges with ease.

“By using brokerage, the problems caused by unpredictability are mitigated,” said Zach Moore, a Regional Operations Director for Dedicated. “If this shipper needs more capacity, all they do is tap into Xpress Technologies’ pool of drivers, and we handle the rest.”

This combines two reliable shipping methods into one streamlined, custom solution for our shipper. We find that typically, these custom pairings are exactly what a shipper needs. Their expected and largely predictable volume of goods is serviced with ease, and when they need to expand, Xpress Technologies gives them a large amount of breathing room at a moment’s notice.

Each Friday, this customer sends out a report grading their carriers, ranking them from highest performance to lowest performance. Carriers are penalized for late deliveries or problems with service. And each Friday, we’re excited to see our name at or near the top. Just like we want it to be.

Our pillars of giving https://www.usxpress.com/our-pillars-of-giving/ https://www.usxpress.com/our-pillars-of-giving/#respond Wed, 06 Apr 2022 20:57:42 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35878

How our partnership powers community engagement.

Free college? Check. Service dogs for veterans? You bet. Eyes on the road to help prevent human trafficking? We’re on it. Supporting families through illness? Yep.

At U.S. Xpress, our work to support our employees and our communities covers a lot of ground, and you help us make it happen. Working with you to move your goods powers our ability to put good into our communities. We do that through our pillars of giving, which guide our community efforts into four key groups:

• Education and innovation
• Families and health
• Safety and well-being
• Military veterans’ programs

Within each of these pillars, we’ve partnered with a featured organization. Though our giving isn’t exclusive to them, they’re long-term partners we support through employee payroll deductions, regular volunteering, service projects, and more.

So, who are these partners?

Full Ride – Education and innovation

If they’re with our family of brands, drivers, technicians, and their families can go to college for free with our Full Ride program. Our team members get free tuition through the University of Arizona’s Global Campus, whether they’re studying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Investing in our community means taking care of our own and making sure our team has everything they need to further their education.

Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer – Families and health

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer supports families through the difficulties of pediatric cancer. From diagnosis to rehabilitation, Austin Hatcher supports families through occupational, art, and music therapy, counseling, neuro-cognitive testing, and more, all at no cost to the family.

“It’s important that these families are supported during what’s an incredibly difficult time,” said Amy Jo Osborn, President and CEO of Austin Hatcher. “Because of strong partnerships like ours with U.S. Xpress, we’re able to create a robust safety net for families navigating childhood cancer, all at no cost.”

Truckers Against Trafficking – Safety and well-being

We’ve partnered with Truckers Against Trafficking so our drivers are certified to spot the signs of human trafficking. At any given time, an estimated 40 million people are trapped in labor or commercial sex, and trafficking networks often cross paths with our professional drivers’ routes and stops. Those who are trafficking others frequent motels, truck stops, rest stops, and restaurants. Truckers Against Trafficking trains professional drivers to spot the signs of human trafficking and report what they see to authorities.

Warrior Freedom Service Dogs – Military veterans’ programs

It’s estimated that up to 30% of military veterans experience post-traumatic stress following their service. For many, service dogs can help them regain control of their life. Warrior Freedom Service Dogs is dedicated to pairing veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress to trained service dogs. The dogs are rescued from shelters and provided to the veterans at no cost.

“We see so many of our military veterans come home with brain injuries or PTSD,” Adam Keith, Warrior Freedom Service Dog’s CEO and co-founder, said. “When partnered with a specially trained dog, the veterans regain a bit of their freedom and confidence, and most end up finding a community with us. With the support of U.S. Xpress, we’re able to train even more dogs that support our military veterans.”

Getting involved

You can see all this and more in our 2021 Corporate Responsibility Report. This report outlines goals regarding sustainability, community giving, and programs impacting our workforce. As part of this report, we announced a goal of doubling our community engagement by 2025 and established the above four key pillars of giving.

April is National Volunteer Month, a time to reflect on the importance of giving your time and energy to others. If you’re having trouble finding reputable charities to give your effort or money to, consider Warrior Freedom Service Dogs, Truckers Against Trafficking, or Austin Hatcher Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Lettuce help you prepare for produce season https://www.usxpress.com/lettuce-help-you-prepare-for-produce-season/ https://www.usxpress.com/lettuce-help-you-prepare-for-produce-season/#respond Wed, 30 Mar 2022 19:44:47 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35871

Three strategies to navigate the upcoming shipping surge.

Temperatures are rising, and spring is here. That can only mean one thing for logistics: Produce season is knocking on the door. On top of the frustrations with the ongoing industry-wide capacity crunch, the Journal of Commerce estimates that spot market freight volume rises by up to 30% during produce season.

Produce season is an annual demand cycle the industry sees every year. Around March, produce starts popping out of the ground, and farmers need to get it to market as soon as possible. From late March to Memorial Day, retailers stock their shelves. Because of the huge volume of produce moving throughout the country, nationwide truck capacity is focused on getting it delivered.

This season can be lucrative for carriers because they can afford to be picky. You may already see some begin to refocus their assets now that preparation for produce shipping is in full swing.

Don’t fret — with a little strategic planning, the squeeze can be mitigated. Here are three strategies to keep your business operating smoothly despite this hectic season.

1) Become a shipper of choice.
Because demand is so high, carriers can afford to be picky. Stand out from the crowd by offering professional drivers perks like basic accommodations and parking, and make sure you’ve got a daily and weekly unload plan to guide your logistics operation. Being prepared makes for smooth sailing, and your carrier partner will be eager to grow relationships with organized shippers given the fast-paced nature of the season.

2) Be flexible.
While it’s easier said than done, flexibility will be your best friend during produce season. Can you ship on the weekend? Can you unload early in the morning or late at night? Give carriers attractive pickup and unload windows — they’re searching for quick turnarounds to capture as much of the seasonal spike as possible. We see shippers take advantage of this and have great success.

3) Do a bit of digging.
Study carrier networks during produce season. Can you take advantage of the seasonal changes and provide them with backhauls to position them into busy markets? Can you help a carrier get closer to their destination? You might be able to move some of your goods their way. Use a market analysis tool or take a look at helpful guides to get a pulse on carrier networks. With a bit of sleuthing, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the season’s increased activity.

This season clamps down on the industry — capacity shifts to meet demand, and shippers sit and watch as rates climb. With a bit of planning, you can create streamlined processes to counter the season’s craziness, improve experience for yourself and carrier partners, and reduce anxiety.

Three solutions to fill in the capacity gaps https://www.usxpress.com/three-solutions-to-fill-in-the-capacity-gaps/ https://www.usxpress.com/three-solutions-to-fill-in-the-capacity-gaps/#respond Thu, 24 Mar 2022 15:47:35 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35865

Moving your goods doesn’t have to feel like an unsolvable puzzle. Custom solutions get the job done.

We hear it from shippers all the time: Getting goods moved is a hassle. Too often, carriers don’t have the solution you need, or they try to pigeon-hole you into a solution that isn’t the right fit. Even worse, you can’t find the capacity you need, so you feel forced into a compromise with ill-fitting solutions. You’ve got to get goods moved, and finding the perfect fit can often delay your operation.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

U.S. Xpress has three distinct, yet complementary service offerings, and they can be paired, mixed, and matched together to create a curated capacity solution for you.

Dedicated
Unpredictability can throw a wrench in your entire supply chain. Dedicated solutions alleviate, and in some cases, eliminate that unpredictability with locked-in pricing, ending the days of fluctuating carrier rates that force you into constant budget adjustments. Dedicated provides guaranteed capacity, a reliable set of drivers that become an extension of your organization, and more dependability.

With Dedicated, you don’t have to worry about where your carrier will come from each day. We’ve already planned it out, so you can spend time running the business instead of chasing down trucks during a capacity crunch.

Over-the-road trucking
Our OTR offerings are customizable to fit your needs: solo drivers, teams, local and regional services, agents, and more. Artificial intelligence helps us plan and manage our fleet, find the routes and loads that make the most sense for you, and reduces inefficiencies so we can move goods like it’s never been done before. OTR trucking is our bread and butter – we’ve got 37 years of experience to back it up.

Brokerage
Modern brokerage like what we’ve developed with Xpress Technologies is embracing tech solutions that give carriers new tools to take the work out of managing their fleets and tracking their loads, which leads to expanded capacity for you. When powered by data science and machine learning, brokerage is a powerful option to move freight and expand capacity. All the freight acceptance, revenue management, and fleet management are in one place, creating a more transparent environment for both shippers (like you) and carriers.

Putting it all together
These three solutions can be mixed, matched, and paired together to suit your needs. Maybe you need more help from our Dedicated group, but demand the flexibility of supplementary capacity that brokerage provides. Maybe you’ve got goods headed out for a long trip – OTR can help. Between these three offerings, your capacity can be expanded infinitely, all with the white-glove support you deserve.

Three impactful ways for shippers to support women drivers https://www.usxpress.com/three-impactful-ways-for-shippers-to-support-women-drivers/ https://www.usxpress.com/three-impactful-ways-for-shippers-to-support-women-drivers/#respond Tue, 08 Mar 2022 19:27:06 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35816

Our industry has more female professional truck drivers than ever before — here’s three easy ways to support them.

The face of professional truck driving is beginning to look different. Though it’s still a male-dominated career, the trucking industry is becoming more diverse. Today, more than 10% of CDL-A holders are women, and according to FreightWaves, the number of female drivers has doubled in the last decade.

That’s not only good news for carriers, but for our shippers as well. Between a resurgent economy and the ongoing capacity crunch, we need more drivers than ever before. Women professional drivers often have stronger safety scores than their male peers, as they’re 20% less likely to be involved in an accident. Ellen Voie, CEO of Women in Trucking, said, “In every category, from reckless driving to improper lane changing, women were found to be safer drivers.”

However, there are challenges our industry should address so we can continue to properly support and encourage our female drivers.

According to Women in Trucking, there are specific circumstances in professional truck driving when most women don’t feel safe, which could slow the speed of women entering the field. Eighty-seven percent of women surveyed said truck stops are unsafe for women, and more than 85% said rest stops are unsafe, as well. Similarly, 74% of women said shipper facilities can pose safety threats.

We can all do our part, but as a shipper, consider these three ways you can directly support our female drivers.

Create well-lit areas for parking and bathrooms at your shipping locations. According to the Women in Trucking survey, “… 77% of women remain in lighted areas as much as possible when they stop at a truck stop or rest area, while another 47% attempt to remain around other humans.” At shipping locations, make sure the areas where drivers spend their time is well-lit, not isolated, and clearly visible. Additionally, make sure drivers can quickly learn whether your shipping location has restrooms they can use. Many female truck drivers plan their restroom breaks in advance so they can avoid unsafe or poorly lit truck stops. Making sure they know they can depend on you for a safe place to take a break is an easy way to make your company welcoming to everyone.

Assure respect is given equally. When the industry is comprised of 90% men, women are viewed as outliers, and outliers are often treated differently. Even if intentions are well-meaning, it’s not hard to undermine someone by not giving them the respect they deserve. As our industry changes, consider an expectation-setting meeting with your team that stresses the importance of treating everyone equally. They’re all doing the same exact job, after all.

Consider extra training for security staff. On-site security staff are charged with making sure everyone is safe. If your staff aren’t trained to spot the signs of harassment or abuse, consider enrolling your team in a reputable program like Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT). TAT even offers a Shipping Partners Program that is specific training for staff at shipper locations. Training your staff to spot red flags is a valuable tool for creating a safe workplace.

Women are entering professional truck driving at a faster rate than ever before, and that’s a great thing — women are safer drivers, and we need their skills to meet the market’s shipping demands. Go the extra mile to make sure they feel safe and respected to help ensure their number continues to grow in our industry.

Proven ways to become a shipper of choice https://www.usxpress.com/proven-ways-to-become-a-shipper-of-choice/ https://www.usxpress.com/proven-ways-to-become-a-shipper-of-choice/#respond Wed, 02 Mar 2022 19:40:37 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35802

With a few adjustments, your operation will quickly become a professional driver’s favorite destination, and that’s just good business.

It’s hard to imagine everything professional truck drivers deal with if you haven’t driven yourself. It’s not as straightforward as simply driving; they face navigation and scheduling challenges, traffic and inclement weather, to say nothing of the detailed regulations for record keeping, load weight, hours of service, and more.

After long hours on the road, professional drivers are looking to stretch their legs, rest, and recoup — an unprepared shipper only causes more stress.

With a bit of forethought and planning, you can streamline your shipping operations, saving you time, money, and effort, while providing a friendly environment that fosters goodwill and a positive reputation among drivers and carriers. Relationships are two-way streets, and shippers can strengthen their professional driver relationships with these tips.

If you can, provide parking
There’s a desperate need for truck parking. Industry surveys, year after year, continue to show that safe, reliable parking is a top concern of professional drivers. According to the American Trucking Associations, drivers spend around an hour each day looking for parking, which equates to approximately $5,500 of lost earnings every year. That’s the same as a 12% pay cut if a driver makes the median income. One driver we spoke with said he once drove 50 miles to find a parking spot while a trailer was being loaded. If your yard can be reconfigured to accommodate additional parking spaces, doing so will launch your shipping operation to the top of professional drivers’ favorite shippers list.

Put together a daily loading and unloading plan
How prepared are you for incoming trailers? Many professional drivers pull in to find shippers unprepared to receive their load, leaving them stranded and losing money. For drop and hook loads, is the empty trailer ready? Or will drivers need to spend hours chasing a trailer? Conversely, if you don’t have empty trailers available, have you communicated this to the carrier? Professional drivers who expect a drop and hook may not appreciate being surprised with a live load. Having a sound grasp on your schedule and resources is important to being a good business partner.

Provide basic accommodations
Imagine this: you’ve been behind the wheel most of the day and could really use a snack, some fresh air, and a place to stretch your legs, and you assume you’ll be able to rest at the shipper’s facilities. As you arrive, you learn the shipper doesn’t allow professional drivers to use their restroom or even offer you a place to wait while your trailer is being unloaded. Now, you’ve got to hop back in your cab and find a rest stop close by, only to drive back when your next load is ready.

This common occurrence for drivers leads to unnecessary headaches and frustrations. Providing a place to wait, restrooms, or basic refreshments like bottled water make professional drivers’ lives much easier, growing your relationship with your carrier.

Conclusion
Strong, positive working relationships between carriers and shippers are good business. Some shippers think managing their business relationships should take a backseat to productivity, when in reality, healthy working relationships are a critical component of productivity. When both parties work together to help each other out, that’s the makings of a promising, profitable partnership.

Three ways self-driving tech will impact logistics https://www.usxpress.com/three-ways-self-driving-tech-will-impact-logistics/ https://www.usxpress.com/three-ways-self-driving-tech-will-impact-logistics/#respond Thu, 24 Feb 2022 19:09:01 +0000 https://www.usxpress.com/?p=35796 Autonomous trucks can add capacity while improving the lives of professional drivers.

Autonomous trucks will be on the road sooner than you may expect, and they’ll be a key part of how goods are moved, expanding capacity, improving the lives of professional drivers, and creating new jobs.

Though autonomous trucks could hit the road as soon as 2023, we’re not replacing our professional drivers with robots — you can’t replicate the deep knowledge and judgement of highly skilled drivers. They’re the lifeblood of our industry.

So, how will autonomous trucks affect logistics? Partnerships like ours with Aurora, the latest of a group of agreements we have with autonomous developers, will change the industry for the better. Consider these three potential effects of putting autonomous trucks on the road.

Self-driving tech can dramatically expand capacity – Professional drivers follow strict hours of service requirements, but autonomous trucks won’t be bound by those constraints. We estimate that one self-driving truck will have twice the utilization as a human-operated truck, effectively doubling capacity. Tonnage is projected to grow by about 2.5% each year, which could mean we’ll need 4.2 million professional truck drivers on the road by 2030. Given the existing driver shortage and the need to add up to 1 million drivers in the next 10-15 years, autonomous trucks are a promising option to meet the country’s growing capacity needs.

Ultimately, autonomous trucks could improve drivers’ lives – This may sound counterintuitive, but self-driving trucks could take on less desirable routes drivers often avoid. They may be routes that keep professional drivers on the road for long periods of time, lack service centers or truck stops, or be far from home. These types of lanes can be handled by autonomous trucks, meaning professional drivers can be shifted to routes close to home on a more consistent and reliable schedule. Professional drivers will get more predictable hours and more time at home with their families, something we know they want and need.

Create new jobs – Autonomous vehicles require special tools and knowledge to maintain. We’ll need technicians, computer scientists, developers, and more to support this next generation of trucks. We’ll need managers and staff at autonomous-specific service centers. Amid fears that these trucks will reduce the need for employees, we anticipate the need for more logistics professionals.

“The future of trucking will involve innovative technology that these developers are creating, which is why we’re collaborating now to assure we’re first to market with autonomous trucks,” said Eric Fuller, President & CEO of U.S. Xpress. “Self-driving technology will afford us more solutions that we can pass on to our customers, all while benefitting our professional drivers. It’s a real win-win.”

The future of logistics is knocking at the door, and self-driving trucks stand to make our professional drivers happier, help combat supply chain stressors, and create new jobs. We know capacity will be expanded, and our customers will be able to ship more goods faster. What’s not to love? As we look ahead at the future of logistics, we’ll have more exciting announcements, and you’ll be the first to hear about them.
